Our Master of Science in Accounting and Taxation program offers courses in the evening that can be completed at one's own pace. The accelerated format allows you the ability to earn the masters degree in as few as 7 months (or longer if you prefer) after graduating with an undergraduate degree in accounting. Students without an undergraduate degree in accounting may be admitted into the MSAT and complete the undergraduate prerequisite courses as part of their program of study. All undergraduate accounting courses are offered in the day and/or evening, depending on the semester. Students with a graduate degree may complete a certificate in taxation. Students who earned an undergraduate degree in a field other than accounting may also earn a certificate in accounting by completing specified undergraduate accounting courses.

Admission

Admission is based on the applicant's undergraduate grade point average, GMAT score, a personal statement, and two references. Applicants who have passed the CPA examination, CMA examination, CFA examination, CA examination, Bar Exam, or have a previous master's degree need not take the GMAT. In certain extraordinary cases, GMAT waivers based on substantial work experience  may be granted.

All candidates must submit the following:

  • A completed application form
  • Application fee: Domestic - $45, International - Waived as international students must have their non-US academic degrees evaluated by World Education Services (http://www.wes.org)
  • Official transcripts of all previous baccalaureate and graduate study
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Letter of Intent
  • Current resume
  • The results on the Graduate Management Admissions Test
  • International students must submit TOEFL scores and a Guarantor's Statement of Financial Support. Applicants are required to attain a score of 80 on the TOEFL, internet based, scoring at least a 20 in each part.
  • Students with non-US degrees and courses must have these credentials evaluated by World Education Services (http://www.wes.org). Non-US academic credentials without WES evaluation will not be accepted.

Applications

Students can apply to matriculate in the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.  Application and all material due dates are as follows:

Domestic Applicants:
Fall admission               July 1st
Spring admission          November 15th
Summer admission       March 15th

International Applicants Requiring a Student Visa:
Fall admission               May 1st
Spring admission          September 15th
Summer admission       January 15th

Admission decisions will be made shortly after the application deadline.

Applications submitted after the deadline will be considered for the next semester.

Career Services

The major national and regional public accounting firms and financial service companies recruit students at the University of Hartford. The University, in cooperation with the Department of Accounting and Taxation, has an excellent Career Center that assists all students with both initial placements during the program as well as later assistance as students move between jobs. Over the past several years, 95% of the graduates of the Master of Science in Accounting and Taxation are working in jobs in their chosen field within financial services and related professions.

Full-Time Professors of Accounting

Most of our full-time faculty members have Ph.D.s or other doctoral degrees in their field. Most are either CPAs or CMAs (or both) and have substantial professional experience. We complement their expertise with a few carefully selected adjunct faculty members who have particular specialties within accounting, taxation, or financial management.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition includes textbooks, course materials, university fees,special activities and social events for graduate courses. Tuition for the program for 2010-2011 is $645 per credit. MSAT courses are generally 3 credit courses. Graduate students taking Undergraduate courses (with the exception of AMSAT) pay undergraduate part-time tuition and must purchase their own textbooks for those courses.
