Entrepreneurial Studies The majority of new job openings in the United States today are in small businesses, and most successful business leaders display a great deal of entrepreneurial behavior. Entrepreneurial Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the tools needed to start a new business, manage a small business, expand a family business, lead innovation efforts in a corporate environment, or become an effective manager in a fast-growing enterprise. As part of the business core, students take upper-division business requirements, including Introduction to Marketing, Managing Organizational Behavior, Business Finance, Management Information Systems, and Operations Management. The major program then begins with a Principles of Entrepreneurship, and continues with upper-level courses in all of the business disciplines, including Marketing Communications, Small Business Finance, Accounting/Tax for Small Business, and Business Law. The capstone Seminar in Entrepreneurship pulls it all together, giving students an opportunity to complete a professional business plan that can be implemented to start a new venture of their own creation and including participation in a campus wide business plan competition. Recommended Electives The following electives can enhance a student's program of study by providing a student the exposure to an industry he/she plans to enter or has a special interest in (e.g., Human Resources, Leadership, Real Estate), including taking advantage of what others schools at the University of Hartford can offer (e.g., Engineering, Art, Education). Such exposure will provide the student with the experience and the skills necessary to compete in the entrepreneurial world. Nonetheless, students are urged to contact the program advisor for guidance and advice prior to taking any elective courses.
Professors of Entrepreneurial Studies Barry C. Broden, broden@hartford.edu, Young Entrepreneurs and Managers SocietyThis Barney Club unites students who are interested in entrepreneurship and/or management as a career. The club provides an opportunity for students to develop their leadership and management skills in these areas through service projects, such Students for Free Enterprise, and contacts with professionals in the field. Guest speakers share their success stories and experiences and provide opportunities for students to learn and establish contacts. Field trips to companies also give students a picture of how these principles are put into practice. Contact the Management and Marketing Department at (860) 768-4566 for more information.
